Row 1. Into loop work: (1dc 2ch) counts as first treble, 13 tr (14 in all) TURN.
Row 2. Work (1dc 2ch) into first treble, work 1ch 1tr into each tr of row 1. (= 14tr and 13 1ch spaces) TURN
Row 3. Working into 1 chain space of row 2, make (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) 10 times. (This forms a picot). Into the next (11th space) work 1dc, then 5ch , skip 3 spaces and work 1dc into 2nd ch of first tr post of row 2. TURN. (This completes fan 1)
Fan 2
Row 4. Into 5ch space work (1dc 2ch) counts as first tr, 13tr (14 in all) then skip 1 picot of 3rd row and then 1dc into next picot 2 ch space TURN.

Continue in this way until you have made 8 fans.
On last row make a picot in all 13 spaces, then secure with 1 dc into the 7th picot of row 3 of fan 6. This is now the 7th from the left or fourth from the right. Cut thread and weave in end.
To make a tassel cut 5 threads each 20cm long. Fold in half and loop through starting loop. I include the beginning thread with this.
I then spray starch and iron to make stiff.

I make these for the school fete. I also did a heap at Christmas to put in the cards, and have a few on hand as a "Thank - yous" and Birthday Gifts, Mothers Day etc.They sell like crazy at charity fundraisers. I enjoy making them in different colours, and mount them on a piece of card with some words scribbled on. ala Happy Reading, Thinking of you etc.. Depends how soppy I am feeling .

I'm working on this now and am truly loving it. So far I'm only on fan 4 :) This is my first bookmark thread crochet project. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Not sure how well it will work out but I'm thinking of adapting the pattern to a barrette since its so pretty. I think if i just make it as is and cover the metal part with the same yarn that i use to crochet it, I could attach to barrate and still have it lacey looking.

These fan bookmarks are great for my bookclubs next book. We are reading a book by Lisa See called Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It is based in 19th century China and about how these two women beacame friends using the languge called Nu Shu. They relayed many messges back and forth using anything they could without drawing suspicion, including thier fans.
They're lovely!
I'm trying to figure out the shortcuts of the stiches, but it's so difficult... :( Do you the the pattern in international symbols? Or maybe even which shortcut represents which symbol?

This is an incredible beautiful quick and easy bookmark. All of the Chinese people admire it greatly. I am giving them out as holiday presents. They probably won't use them as bookmarks but will hang them as decoration.
Two suggestions for variations on this beatiful pattern:
1. change the first fan into a full "wheel" by expanding to 24 dc on the first round (sl to join, turn), 24 dc,ch on the second round (then sl to join, turn) and then sc,2ch,sc in 21 ch sp before ch 5 and continue with original pattern on round 3
2. instead of stopping short of the last 3 ch sp on round 3, continue sc,2ch,sc in all ch sp, and then dbl-tr (4 loops on hook) 3 ch sp back to create the base for the next fan, then continue as before.

I have seen this lovely bookmark pattern made into a scarf on Ravelry. It's gorgeous! But I think I'm doing something wrong! I seem okay up until the picot round....it just seems that when I make the picots, they don't look like picot-y enough....I get lost from this row onwards...can anyone give me suggestions as to how I can get this row and all the subsequent rows right? Thanks so much!

I love this pattern! I extended it to make it into a belt, and now all of my friends want one. I've had to buy different colors to satisfy all of there desires. I love making these. They are super easy and look like they took way more time to make then they actually did. I've got it down to 45 mintues a bookmarker. A prefect gift for a teacher or book lover. I adore this pattern! It translates really well into lace if you just continue making the fans. I actually made two strips as a wedding gift for a friend who participates in a historical reenactment group and she adored them!
